About Hania and Crete
Hania is arguably Crete’s most exotic city, its narrow streets winding through Venetian buildings, restaurants, and hotels. While getting your TEFL certification in Hania, you can shop the food stalls of the public market, visit the tranquil and shady public gardens or take in views of the impressive Turkish mosque that dominates the harbor, the focal point of the town’s activity. Hania, which is small enough to get around in on foot, is also a great starting point for exploring the solitude and wilderness of Crete’s western interior.
The crown jewel of the Greek Islands, Crete is loved not only for its sandy beaches but also for its unique culture, warm hospitality, and fascinating history. TEFL trainees can enjoy the shopping and nightlife in its vibrant harbor cities or a relaxing day on the sun-drenched beaches along the coast. The ruins of Knossos provide an interesting glimpse into Crete’s 3,000-year-old Minoan civilization, while the rugged Samaria Gorge boasts some of Europe’s best natural scenery.
TEFL Jobs in Crete and Greece
With over 6,000 language schools, including many in Crete itself, Greece has a massive demand for qualified, TEFL certified, native-speaking English teachers. In Crete, there are literally hundreds of frontistiria, or private language schools, that the majority of Greek school children attend after school hours. Most private schools require teachers to have a university degree but, in some cases, it is possible to find employment without one. Hiring season in Greece is typically from August to October and many English teachers choose to supplement their income by giving private lessons.
Those interested in teaching English in Greece should take one of the classroom TEFL courses to make themselves more competitive when applying to jobs.
