San Jose, Costa Rica
The capital of Costa Rica, San Jose is located in the Central Valley, a fertile basin 3,773 feet above sea level. On the hillsides and near the volcanoes surrounding San Jose you will find quaint villages, rolling pastures, small farms, and vast coffee plantations.
In the basin itself lays the San Jose metro area. The bustling city is home to an extensive variety of cultural and social options, including museums, theaters, restaurants, and neighborhood markets. Live music, trendy bars, and dance clubs vibrating with tropical rhythms are all vital parts of San Jose's active nightlife. In addition, the city's central location is a great starting point for adventures to any part of beautiful Costa Rica. As a TEFL trainee or English teacher, you’ll find that San Jose has an ideal mix of capital city amenities and relaxed “Tico” attitude.
Teaching English
in Costa Rica
 |
The nearly perfect picture of political democracy, economic stability, and natural beauty, Costa Rica is a great place to visit and to live. English language proficiency is a valued skill in a country which puts such great stock in its tourism industry as does the small but attractive nation of Costa Rica. EFL students here range from school children, to university students, to adult professionals.
TEFL teachers will find that jobs are easiest to come by in San Jose and the surrounding areas. And because the capital and its environs are less touristy than other parts of Costa Rica, they often have a lower cost of living, allowing an English teacher’s salary to provide a satisfying lifestyle. Teachers can also take on private EFL students to supplement their incomes in order to save money or to travel the stunning and friendly nation of Costa Rica in their time off.

"I teach young children from Spanish-speaking households in a private one-on-one setting. My students are wonderful and so eager to learn. I love the laid-back nature of Costa Rica and the people are so appreciative and kind and eager to learn English. My favorite thing about teaching English is being able to help somebody learn to communicate with another culture.
TEFL was a good excuse to go to Costa Rica, a new country, and experience the culture while getting certified. If I didn’t have a TEFL [certificate] and teaching experience, I would not have the wonderful job [I have now]. I would definitely recommend the experience to others!" |

| “The
TEFL program… is really strong. It's intensive, it's hard
work, but it's worth it. I never would have been able
to get up in front of a class and do what I do now, if
I hadn't come through the program. Highly recommended
for anyone who wants to teach.” |

“The
TEFL Program was great, and really taught me a lot.
It wasn't rocket science, but it sure put things
in perspective for me, and gave me great tools with
which to teach the classes. After the program,
I joined [the school] as a teacher, and had a great
time teaching for three months - lots of work, lots
of fun, and I really got close with my students.” |

“The
course was comprehensive, intensive, and professional
in every manner. The teaching staff were extremely
well qualified and even though professional... were very friendly, helpful,
and approachable. The entire staff created a warm
and friendly environment to make the course a pleasurable
experience. ” |
