Suzhou, China
Praised as “a paradise on earth” since ancient times, Suzhou features tranquil streams and ponds, beautifully preserved temples, and some of China’s most fertile and stunning gardens. This water town is also famed for its wandering web of canals and delicate hanging bridges. Beyond its picturesque beauty, Suzhou has much to offer TEFL trainees in cultural richness—from UNESCO World Heritage classical gardens and regular offerings of folk music and dancing, to mouth-watering cuisine, and modern nightlife options. This city of 6 million is only a 45-minute train ride from Shanghai, and countless other area attractions.
Suzhou is steeped in history and the arts, having produced some of the nation’s most respected calligraphers, poets, and painters in the city’s 2,500-year history. Also known for its silk production and unmatched embroidery, Suzhou is a great place to purchase, or at least admire, beautiful local handicrafts. Between classes, TEFL trainees can enjoy a traditional Kunqu opera, relax in a peaceful teahouse, or wander the city, taking in its whitewashed houses, lush greenery, and labyrinth of meandering waterways.
| Teaching English in China |
With more people learning English than the entire population of the U.S., China is experiencing an incredibly high demand for TEFL teachers. The country’s increasingly globalized economy and rapidly expanding tourism industries require that most Chinese have a good command of the English language. And in a heavily foreign business environment, students in China need English skills to be competitive and successful in their future careers.
TEFL teachers in China can enjoy great benefits such as free housing, excellent pay, and reimbursed airfare with most placements. In addition, many employers offer free Mandarin lessons to help English teachers more comfortably navigate daily life. China’s low cost of living will also enable you to immerse yourself in the culture and unique beauty of this vast country—and perhaps even walk away with a decent savings!

“The very first lesson I had to present [in my teaching job in China] revolved around ‘Modal Verbs’ and ‘Conditionals’; then the next day ‘the infinitive versus –ing.’ The [China TEFL] course was my savior… I'm so pleased that all these matters were part of the course, and that you not only taught them but reviewed them several times. Not only that, but the introduction to and presentation of role plays that we did has been invaluable in my classes, especially the Intermediate and Advanced Business classes. You are right: the Chinese do love their grammar. We worked Monday thru Wednesday and have relaxed the last couple of days. Then commence again Saturday for a five day shift, so early night tonight.
PS We attended a Chinese lesson today at work, on our day off; [our teachers] would be proud of us and what we displayed from the TEFL China Course. Thanks again! ” |
