Santiago is Chile’s political and cultural capital, making it a great starting point for your adventure in Chile. You’ll find an eclectic mix of Colonial architecture and modern skyscrapers, outdoor markets and luxury shopping, tranquil parks far from the city center as well as a lively night scene where tourists and locals mix.
Centrally located within the country, Santiago is the perfect base for visitors to branch out and explore other regions of Chile. The city itself—although a bustling epicenter of activity—is also surrounded by pristine, snow-capped mountains and only an hour away from Chile’s coastline.
No matter which part of the city you visit, you’ll notice one common factor: Santiago is clean, safe, and efficient and its people are friendly and always willing to lend a hand. Whether you want to fine-tune your wine palette (or just enjoy a few glasses of Chilean wine with friends), ski the slopes of the Andes or check out the local fish market and revel in Chile’s gastronomical delights, Chile is an ideal destination to teach abroad.
“I always wanted the adventure of living and working in a foreign country as a means of meeting some of my global neighbors. My favorite thing about teaching English as a second language in Santiago, Chile has been getting to know the students. Through BridgeTEFL, I have had the opportunity to teach some of the best and brightest executives in the world. At a time in my life when my earlier careers had begun to seem old and stale, my adventure teaching English has re-invigorated my life and given me a fresh perspective on the modern world.
By working here in Santiago I have come to know the country as a resident and not just as a tourist. Though I entered this adventure with some apprehension, after teaching here for over a year, I know that I made the right choice for a new career. It has been a rewarding time in many ways and I feel proud that I have lived up to the challenge of living successfully in a different culture and learning to speak the local language. When I look back I can’t imagine not having taken this step in my life.”
What is the IDELT certification?
IDELT stands for International Diploma in English Language Teaching. This is the best kind of TEFL certification (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) you can take, since it’s onsite training. Onsite TEFL courses are preferred by schools abroad because they are hands-on, classroom-based and include a teaching practicum with real language learners. The IDELT is not focused just on teaching in Chile or any certain country; it can be used to teach English as a foreign language in any country worldwide!
This course can be taken on its own or as part of the Teach in Chile Program.
Is this a paid teaching position?
After your TEFL certification course, you’ll be qualified for paid teaching positions at the English division of BridgeChile, or at one of the many other language institutes in Santiago or surrounding cities. Most teachers make a salary which converts to around 10-12 USD per hour, which is enough to support yourself while abroad, living by local standards.
Are there age limits for this program?
No, there aren’t upper or lower age limits. People of any age are welcome to apply! A bachelor’s degree is required, however, so most participants are at least in their twenties.
What are the English students at BridgeChile like?
Virtually all the students at BridgeChile will be motivated business professionals who work for a multi-national companies. The majority of these students can understand written English, as they have reading and writing English in the university and/or professional environment. Most students are in their thirties or older. This type of student is fairly typical at other language schools in Santiago, as well.
What is a typical teaching day like?
Most of the students and groups will take 2 or 3 classes each week, and the typical class is 90 minutes. A teacher at Bridge in Chile can expect to teach five or six groups (teaching a total of about 12 classes) each week. The average group class size is three or four students, and you’ll also teach private, one-on-one lessons. You’ll mostly teach outside of normal office times (morning, lunch time and early evening) so teachers have time in the mid-mornings and mid-afternoons to relax, take Spanish classes or do other fun things!
About 75% of our classes are at the clients’ workplace, so there is quite a bit of commuting involved in the job. The subway and the bus system are fairly extensive in Santiago, so that public transport is the way to get around. Most of the clients’ offices are concentrated fairly close to the Bridge location (within 30 minutes).
What if I want to do this program but teach somewhere else?
You definitely can! If you would like to take advantage of the bundled savings of this program (which includes tuition + host family accommodations and other add-ons), but teach at another school in Chile or around the world after the program, that’s great! You’ll have earned an internationally-recognized TEFL certificate that is accepted worldwide.
Can I do this program with a friend?
Sure! Space permitting, if you both apply and are accepted, you can definitely take part together. It’s possible you could both work together at the same school after your TEFL course, too, since you’ll both be guaranteed an interview for any open positions at BridgeChile , and also given assistance connecting with other local English schools, as well.
Why should I go through an onsite program in Chile?
Great question! The Teach in Chile Program is designed for people who may not be comfortable going to South America on their own, after taking an online TEFL course, and “pounding the pavement” for their first job or for housing. In other words, this program takes a lot of the legwork out of the process for you! This program includes an onsite TEFL course valued at $1995, plus great perks like airport pickup, host family accommodations and meals, and a guaranteed interview for jobs at our own BridgeEnglish language school, right on the same campus where you get certified! Supportive onsite staff can also connect you with other local schools in need a teachers, so that you can start working right after your course.
