Comments from Our
Accelerated TEFL Graduates

Toby Martin

"I would recommend the [Accelerated] course whole-heartedly as it has provided an extremely useful, practical and informative introduction to working in teaching ESL. Arriving with a blank canvass I now feel far more confident and comfortable in my potential ability as a teacher and significantly more knowledgeable from the learnt, practiced and applied information."

Hopi Schott

"The 2-week program…is a good way to test the waters of TEFL. This particular program teaches a vast amount of information in a clear and balanced format, despite the time constraints. As the program finishes up, I feel I have an open and supportive link to other TEFL teachers through BridgeTEFL, and people I can ask questions of and seek advice from as I find my way."

William Allen

"I definitely would recommend the [Accelerated] course for those busy people that would like to have intensely focused learning experiences."

With the Accelerated BridgeTEFL program, you can earn a 140-hour TEFL certificate in half the time of standard courses. Our innovative combination of online and on-site learning allows you to get certified after only two weeks in the classroom, giving you extra time to travel or to get a head start on your teaching career.

The Accelerated TEFL consists of our interactive 80-hour TEFL Online Diploma, followed by two weeks of real-world instruction and experience at our training centers worldwide. Course content, program goals, and admission requirements are similar to those of our four-week TEFL courses.

After only two weeks in the classroom, you’ll graduate with an internationally recognized TEFL certificate—and the knowledge and experience you need to jump right into the field of teaching English abroad.

Online
The online portion of your course consists of 12 modules covering the fundamentals of teaching ESL/EFL. You'll also receive specialized Endorsements in two popular areas of ESL/EFL today: Business English and English for Young Learners. During the program, you'll be interacting via Internet with your own personal tutor who will grade assignments, provide personalized feedback, and answer any questions that arise. TEFL Online tutors are all professional, experienced teachers who have either a Master's degree or certification in TEFL.

Onsite
Upon completion of the TEFL Online, you ’ll get a chance to refine your knowledge and implement what you’ve learned in an authentic ESL/EFL classroom. The on-site portion of the course includes demonstrations by professional language teachers, at least 3 hours of practice teaching sessions with real language learners, and trainers who guide you every step of the way, including observing your practice teaching.

TEFL Course Goals
By the end of the TEFL course, trainees will:

  • Acquire essential subject knowledge about the English language.
• Develop a range of practical skills for teaching English to adult learners.
• Know how to lead a communicative, student-centered class.
• Feel prepared to teach using a variety of materials and techniques.

TEFL Course Content

  • Live and video observations of professional language teachers
• At least 3 hours of practice teaching sessions with real language learners
• Trainers who will guide you through the course, including observing your practice teaching
• Instruction and practice in teaching the four basic language skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) and subskills (vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar)
• An introduction to classroom management, including such issues as error correction and giving instructions
• Instruction and practice in preparing formal classroom lessons
• An introduction to language awareness and instruction in how to teach grammar
• An introduction to using multimedia in the classroom, including such topics as DVDs, songs, and the Internet
• Instruction in the basics of teaching Business English and English for Young Learners
• A brief look into the fascinating world of intercultural relations and how culture can affect language acquisition.

TEFL Course Requirements

In order to complete the training and meet the course requirements, trainees must:

• Attend the entire course
• Complete two written assignments and various classroom tasks
• Complete a minimum of 3 hours of practice teaching
• Maintain and submit a portfolio of written assignments and materials related to practice teaching
• Have completed the first 8 modules of the TEFL Online program before on-site start date (The remaining modules can be completed during or after the on-site training. The certificate will be granted when all modules have been completed.)

TEFL Course Assessment

There are no final tests in the TEFL training program. Instead, trainers assess trainees in the four major components of their work:

• Practice teaching and lesson planning
• Course participation
• Written assignments
• TEFL Online course grade

During the two-week on-site program, each trainee will prepare lesson plans for, and teach, a minimum of 3 hours of practice teaching lessons with real students. These classes are observed both by trainers and fellow trainees; the trainers’ evaluations constitute part of the final grade.

This is an intensive course, and for the participation part of their grade, trainees are expected to participate in classroom discussions, keep up on their reading assignments, and complete classroom and self-study tasks as they arise.

There are a total of two graded written assignments, each normally being around 1000 words long. The topics for these papers include the Role of the Teacher/Learner and Language Awareness.

Evaluation and Letter of Reference

Upon completion of the Accelerated TEFL program, BridgeTEFL will issue you an evaluation letter outlining what was covered during the training and your overall performance in the course. You may include this with your resume for future employment references.

TEFL Admission Requirements

All applicants to the TEFL course must:

• Be at least 20 years of age by completion of the course (18- and 19-year-olds are accepted at the center’s discretion)
• Have a standard of education equivalent of that required for entry into higher education
• Have competence in both spoken and written English, such that it permits them to follow the training with no problems (non-native speakers must communicate in English with few or no mistakes, have a level of fluency roughly equal to a score of 280 on the computer-based TOEFL, and complete an oral interview with a member of the admissions staff before enrolling).

No previous teaching experience is required.
